I’ve gone through every MG EV in the current range, compared them with rivals, and written down what a real buyer actually needs to know. The MG electric car range now goes from the MG4 EV Urban at under £24,000 all the way up to the MG Cyberster sports roadster. Let’s get into it. 

What MG Is as an Electric Car Brand in 2026

MG started as a British sports car brand in the 1920s. Today, SAIC Motor, one of China’s largest car groups, owns it, with manufacturing happening in China.

MG4 EV: The mg4 electric car That Put MG on the Map

This is the MG4 electric car that changed MG’s reputation. The 2026 MG4 EV brings a 12.8-inch touchscreen, physical climate buttons sitting below the screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and soft-touch materials on the dashboard.

Two variants are on sale: Long Range with a 64 kWh LFP battery, doing 280 miles; and Extended Range with a 77 kWh NCM battery, doing 338 miles. DC fast charging goes up to 154 kW, so 10-80% takes 25 minutes.

The MG4 EV price in the UK starts from £29,995. The MG EV price across the whole range runs from £23,495 for the Urban to £55,245 for the Cyberster. The MG4 electric range is cut down to two grades in 2026.

In Australia, the 2026 MG 4EV Essence 64 costs $39,990 drive-away, which is $5,000 down from before. 

In my experience, what sets the MG 4 EV apart at this price is how it feels behind the wheel. It’s rear-wheel drive, well-balanced, and fun on a twisty road, which most MG electric car review writers say took them by surprise. Most electric MG cars at this price drive like kitchen appliances.

The MG4 doesn’t. Five drive modes, including Snow and Custom; one-pedal driving; and five regenerative braking settings give you real control over how the car behaves. For someone buying their first electric MG car, that kind of choice is worth a lot. 

MG4 XPower: Performance mg electric car Without the Big Price Tag

The XPower runs dual motors, has all-wheel drive, 320 kW of power, and reaches 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. Australia pricing is $47,990 drive away. UK pricing is below £37,000. Range drops to around 405 km when you push the dual motors hard.

The XPower has a 64 kWh NMC battery, launch control, an electronic differential, and sport seats as standard. I’ve yet to find another MG car electric at this price that comes anywhere near this acceleration.

Every electric car review that tests the XPower says the same thing: you won’t believe that number until you’re actually sitting in the car.

MGS5 EV: Family mg electric suv with Fast Charging

The MGS5 EV uses MG’s MSP platform, the same one that sits under the MG4. It does up to 298 miles WLTP and charges from 10 to 80% in 28 minutes at up to 139 kW DC. Two motor options: 125 kW and 170 kW.

The 170 kW version hits 0-62 mph in 6.3 seconds. UK pricing starts from £28,995. Boot space goes up to 1,441 litres with the seats down.

Seven airbags, MG Pilot driver assistance, and a 12.8-inch touchscreen come fitted across every trim. For a family that needs an MG electric SUV daily, this one is a good pick.

MGS6 EV: MG’s Direct Answer to the Tesla Model Y

MG built the MGS6 EV to go straight at the Tesla Model Y, and the price shows that. UK pricing starts at £37,995 with a 77 kWh battery and over 500 km claimed range. It’s MG’s biggest electric SUV and is for anyone who needs real range without the Tesla or BMW price tag.

Here’s what I found when I looked at both cars side by side: the MGS6 EV gives you more kit for less money, but Tesla’s charging network and software are areas where MG still has ground to cover.

MG ZS EV: Still on Sale, But on Its Way Out

The MG ZS EV was MG’s first electric SUV and still sells in a handful of markets. In India, the MG ZS EV price starts from Rs. 15.50 lakh with a 50.3 kWh battery and 461 km ARAI-claimed range.

Most owners report 300-350 km per charge in daily use. The MG ZS EV long-range variant does around 440 km, claimed. The MG ZS electric takes 80 kW DC and 11 kW AC charging. This ZS EV is being replaced by the MGS5 EV.

A discounted 100 mg ZSEV still does well enough for city driving. The electric MG ZS goes up against the Hyundai Creta Electric and Tata Nexon EV in India, and the MG ZS EV price keeps it in a tight competition.

MG5 EV: The Electric Estate

The MG5 EV is MG’s electric estate, a body shape you don’t often see in the affordable EV space. The MG 5 electric is built for buyers who need to carry loads without moving up to an SUV.

The MG 5 EV sells across a handful of European markets. The electric MG lineup includes this shape when most rivals at this price skip it entirely. If you need that kind of load-carrying use, the MG5 EV is one of the few options you’ll find.

MG Cyberster: The Electric Sports Car Nobody Saw Coming

The MG Cyberster is an electric convertible with up to 496 hp and 0-62 mph in 3.2 seconds. UK pricing starts from £55,245.

The Cyberster MG uses a permanent magnet synchronous motor for electric vehicle performance, the same motor type that sits inside high-performance EVs, and it delivers torque the second you press the pedal.

The MGCyberster is proof that MG can build a car with real sports character, not just everyday transport.

MG 4X: Semi-Solid-State Battery Before Most Brands Even Promised It

The MG 4X is the new MG electric car getting the most attention right now. Pre-orders opened in China on May 11, 2026. It runs a liquid-solid-state battery: 95% solid electrolyte and 5% liquid.

The 54 kWh version does up to 510 km CLTC range. A bigger 64.2 kWh CATL-supplied battery pushes that to 610 km. The starting price in China is under $16,000.

In safety testing, the battery made no smoke or fire after two hours of needle penetration, which SAIC says beat the industry requirement by 20%. European exports are planned before the end of 2026.

MG Electric Car Real-World Range: What Owners Actually See

WLTP numbers are from test conditions, not your daily commute. Cold weather and motorway speeds both cut into the claimed figure. Here’s what actual MG electric vehicle owners have shared on community forums and in owner write-ups. 

The MG4 EV Long Range (64 kWh) returns around 250 miles in mixed driving against the 280-mile WLTP figure. The Extended Range (77 kWh) usually lands around 300-310 miles against the 338 claimed.

Without a heat pump, cold weather can cut range by 20-30% against what you’d get in summer. One owner wrote that after three years and 30,000 km, the battery held up well, but cold-weather performance was down on the early days.

MGS5 EV owners usually get around 250-260 miles against the 298 miles WLTP. For the MG ZS EV range, most Indian owners report 300-350 km against the 461 km ARAI number, which is about what you’d expect from the gap between a lab test and real driving.

How MG Electric Car Charging Works

MG EVs support three ways to charge. A home 7 kW wallbox takes 8-10 hours overnight for a full charge on most models. That’s fine for anyone who plugs in before bed.

On DC fast charging, MG electric car models do well at this price: the MG4 EV takes 154 kW, the MG5 EV takes 139 kW, and the MG ZS EV takes 80 kW. At a 150 kW public DC charger, the MG4 goes from 10-80% in 25 minutes.

MG also supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) on several models, which means the battery can run external devices through an adapter. Most rival brands charge extra for that.

Not all MG EVs use the same battery chemistry, and the difference affects how long the battery lasts, how you should charge it, and how it performs in cold weather. LFP vs NMC: Which Battery Does Each MG Use?

MG runs two main battery types across the MG electric vehicle range. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, used in the MG4 EV Essence 64 and standard MG4X, last well and can be charged to 100% regularly without wearing the cells out over time. 

Nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries, used in the MG4 Extended Range and XPower, fit more energy into the same size pack for better range, but they do better with slightly more thought about when you charge.

For daily use, LFP is the better choice. For people who want every last kilometer of MG electric car range, NMC is the better option.

What Semi-Solid-State Battery Actually Means for a Buyer

The MG 4X brings MG’s SolidCore Battery to production. Swapping most of the liquid electrolyte out for solid material improves energy density, cuts fire risk, and performs better in cold weather.

The solid electrolytes inside each cell also build up a layer that protects battery life over time. This type of battery used to appear only in expensive EVs or lab prototypes. Putting it into a sub-$35,000 electric car is a big deal for anyone at this price.

MG Electric Car Safety: Ratings and What You Get as Standard

The MG4 EV scored five-star Euro NCAP in 2022: 83% for adult protection, 86% for child protection, and 75% for vulnerable road users. The MG4 EV Urban scored five-star ANCAP in 2026 testing.

Every MG electric car comes with MG Pilot as standard: adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, active emergency braking, blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and driver attention monitoring.

Getting all of that without paying extra for it gives MG an advantage against rivals that charge more for the same features.

Are MG Electric Cars Reliable?

MG came last out of 31 brands in the Driver Power survey for 2026, which follows the same result from 2025.

The problems owners mention most often are software bugs that updates sometimes fix and seat vinyl splitting on older MG4 models around 30,000 km.

On the mechanical side, most owners who passed 50,000 km report no big drivetrain trouble.

The seven-year, 80,000-mile warranty, which passes fully to second owners, does help with that. In Australia, keeping dealer service up to date takes warranty cover to 10 years and 250,000 km.

The battery cover runs for seven years or 150,000 km as a separate item. Running an electric vehicle costs less than a petrol car daily because electricity is cheaper per mile than fuel, and there are far fewer parts to worry about.

At UK home electricity rates are around 24p/kWh, filling the MG4 EV’s 64 kWh battery costs roughly £15 and gets you up to 280 miles. A petrol car doing the same distance at 40 mpg costs around £35 at current prices.

That gap grows over twelve months of driving. MG Australia puts six-year service costs for the MG4 EV at $1,285. Service comes around every 24 months or 40,000 km.

The MG electric car also pays zero road tax in its first year in the UK and lands in the lowest company car tax band for fleet buyers.

MG Electric Car vs Rivals: An Honest Look

Against the Volkswagen ID.3, the MG4 EV offers a similar range for several thousand pounds less and more kit included in the price. Against the BYD Dolphin at a close price point, the MG4 drives better and charges faster.

Against the Kia EV4, the MG4 gives up on range, 338 miles against nearly 400, and Kia has a better reliability track record, but the MG wins on price.

Against the Tesla Model Y, the MGS6 EV gives more features for less money, but Tesla’s charging network gives Tesla the win on long trips.
